Common Questions About Sewer Drain Cleaning
Is it possible to prevent drain clogs?
Regular drain maintenance is highly effective at preventing drain clogs. Regularly running hot water followed by cool water and applying a 1:1 baking soda/vinegar solution followed by hot water can eliminate soap scum and buildup within the drain. Doing this once a month will practically ensure your drains run fast and smoothly.
It’s also best to watch what you put down the drain. Over the years, our teams have seen it all. Grease, oil, fats, food debris, baby wipes, personal hygiene products, children’s toys, and more. The best way to prevent clogs is to avoid putting things down the drain that can build up and create a dam in the pipes.
Should I use a liquid drain cleaner?
A word of caution about over-the-counter drain cleaners: the chemicals within them can damage your pipes over time. That’s why we recommend clients steer clear of these “solutions” as they may cause significant (and costly!) damage to your pipes and other plumbing systems.
How do tree roots infiltrate pipes?
Pressure and time are the tree root’s greatest allies. The roots naturally seek water sources, and small cracks or defects in the pipes can make it possible for the tree root to gradually infiltrate the pipe. Prompt removal of the tree root is crucial as it can result in significant water loss and damage to your landscaping. Further, if tree roots have infiltrated at any point along your pipes, it can indicate larger problems with the pipes themselves that need addressing.
Can I clean my drains myself?
While you can remove shallow clogs with plungers, clogs deep within your pipes require specialized equipment and training to remove. Hiring a professional ensures that the proper tools are used and that the clog is permanently removed. While you can purchase the snakes, vacuums, and other tools used to remove deep clogs online or at a hardware store, improper use of these tools can cause extensive damage to your plumbing systems. Unless you have specialized training in plumbing systems, it’s best to leave the work to a professional who will remove the buildup and junk from your pipes without damaging your plumbing system.
What is hydro jetting?
This is a non-invasive method of removing clogs from deep within pipes. It is highly effective at removing even the most stubborn blockages. The process requires high-pressure jets that essentially blast the debris from the sides of the pipes. Done properly, the inside of your pipes will be free of any grease and other debris that can cause the clog to recur. For most homes, the process takes between one to three hours to complete.
Can drain clogs damage my home?
Absolutely! Clogs can cause leaks in the pipes, which can allow moisture to leak from the pipe and into your home. Over time, this can cause extensive damage to flooring, drywall, foundations, and more. That’s why we strongly recommend a prompt resolution of any plumbing clogs you experience.
