The ABCs of Home Electrical Systems - How to Reset a Circuit Breaker

When a circuit breaker trips it will need to be reset from the electrical service panel. The service panel is usually located in the basement or garage. First, locate the circuit breaker that is near the off position or not in the fully on position. A tripped circuit will not move all the way off, but will be in between on and off. Some tripped breakers will show a bit of red on the switch when they are tripped. Second, switch the breaker fully to the OFF position. You must turn off the circuit breaker completely off before turning it on again. When the switch moves back to the On position, power should be restored. If it's not, try flipping the circuit off and on again.

When the Breaker Won't Reset

If the breaker shuts off again after two tries, there may be a short or other problem that should be checked. Do not try to reset a breaker that will not stay on, this means it is working correctly to prevent an electrical fire.
