The ABC’s of Plumbing – Why Is My Toilet Running So Long?
You may have experienced it, you flush the toilet and instead of a short gurgle, there’s a long hissing sound as the water slowly fills the tank.
To find the cause of the running toilet, remove the tank cover. Next, push the lever and see what happens.
Running toilets are usually a symptom of a worn or sticking tank ball, ballcock, intake valve, or float ball.
Sticky intake valve. If the water stops running when you wiggle the handle up and down, the problem is often the linkage between the flush handle and tank ball.
Sticky tank ball or flapper valve. Is the tank ball or flapper valve returning to seal the drain properly?
Float ball. A out of adjustment float ball causes water to dribble into the toilet tank, run out the overflow tube into the toilet bowl before going down the drain.
Ballcock problems. A ballcock that doesn’t seal completely is another possible cause of a running toilet.
