Preventing Tree Roots From Damaging Your Sewer Line
Tree root intrusion is one of the most common causes of sewer line damage. It’s easy to understand why tree roots love sewer lines, as a leaking a leaking sewer line pipe provides an ideal source of water, nutrients and oxygen. Once tree roots make their way into a pipe it’s only a matter of time before they grows inside and block the flow of waste, causing blockages, damaged pipes and expensive repairs. You can avoid expensive sewer line damage by taking a few preventative measures.
Before doing any digging in your yard always call your local utility or the national 811 “Call Before You Dig” number to find the location of your sewer line and other utilities.
Sewer Line Barriers
Sewer line barriers are available that can prevent root growth near into sewer lines. Chemicals like copper sulfate and potassium hydroxide are often spread near sewer lines to inhibit root growth. In addition, metal or thick wood barriers buried vertically next to the sewer pipe will also prevent tree roots from reaching pipes.

The best way to prevent problems down the road is to be smart about what you plant near sewer lines. If you’re planting trees near sewer lines, select slow-growing trees with a small root area. Larger trees should be kept well away from the sewer line.

Signs of tree root damage to sewer lines include frequent unexplained clogs, backed up and slow drains, and gurgling sounds coming from toilets and floor drains.
Sewer Line Video Camera Inspections
To ensure that your sewer line is free of tree roots and other obstructions you should have regular video camera inspections of your sewer line. The inspection involves inserting a small camera is run through the lateral and to find any potential problems. If tree roots or clogs are found, a cable can be run through the sewer pipe to clear clogs or cut through tree roots while cleaning the inner walls of the pipe.
