How to Perform Fall Furnace Maintenance

Posted September 24, 2015

Fall is officially here! You know what that means? It’s time for furnace maintenance to make sure your home’s heating system is ready to take on cooler temperatures. Here are a few things handy homeowners can do before they’re left in the cold:

Before performing any sort of maintenance on your system, be sure to switch off the electrical power. The switch is usually located on a red switch plate at the top of the stairs or near the burner itself.

Check the flue pipe for holes. This is very important because a leaky flue pipe can cause your home to fill with carbon monoxide. If you find small holes, patch them with foil tape but if you notice any corrosion the pipe should be replaced.

Next, open up the system and change the air filter. Your family will be breathing air that flows through here all winter long so it’s imperative to make sure it’s clean.

There are a number of additional maintenance steps that should only be performed by a well-trained professional. That’s where we come in! Contact ABC Plumbing, Sewer, Heating, Cooling and Electric today to schedule your fall furnace maintenance appointment.
