How To Safely Remove a Window Air Conditioner

Still have your A/C unit in your window? With cooler temperatures settling in, it’s time to remove them to avoid cool drafts. After all, drafts can cause your energy bills to skyrocket this season.

The first step to removing a window air conditioning unit is to turn it off and make sure it is unplugged. Then remove the device’s front cover following the owner’s manual and remove the padding that is pressed against the sides.

Then, detach the air conditioner from its base and take special care to make sure it doesn’t fall. Once the air conditioner is free from its base, you can go ahead and take it out of the window. We recommend cleaning the filter and vacuuming any dust or debris before placing the unit in storage.

The final step is to remove the air conditioner’s base from the windowsill. This task usually requires a screwdriver. Once it is removed close the window to make sure it still shuts properly, and check to make sure there is no draft.

Now that your air conditioners are stored for the winter, it’s time to think about your home’s heating system. Contact the experts at ABC today to schedule your annual furnace maintenance and remember to connect with us on Facebook!
