You’re looking for ways to save a few bucks on energy bills and let’s face it, you’re not alone. There’s a fine line between keeping your home at a comfortable temperature and finding ways to cut back on energy consumption and we understand that it can be a real burden at times. But adjusting your thermostat correctly can make a BIG difference - you just need to follow a few simple steps:

Will adjusting your thermostat really save you money? The quick answer is, yes. But it all depends on your methodology. Now that cooler temperatures are making their way into town, here’s what you should be doing and why it matters:
  • According to the Department of Energy, for every degree you lower the target temperature, you’ll save 1% of fuel over an 8-hour period. (This is true during fall and winter months)
  • Lowering the thermostat in the winter means your house might be a bit colder, but your furnace won’t kick on as frequently so it’ll use less energy and save you money.
  • While temperatures are still quite warm, the opposite is beneficial. Sure, turning your thermostat up a few degrees will make the house feel a bit warmer but your system won’t be running as frequently.
  • Programmable thermostats are your friend. There’s no reason to have your hvac system running all day long while nobody's home. Set it so it only kicks on at certain times and take note of how much energy and money you’re saving.
One call makes it simple. For over 60 years, ABC has been providing plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical services to homes all across Chicagoland. At ABC, our people provide professional service with a personal touch.

While it sounds like a simple question, setting your thermostat too high when you leave for summer vacation could actually end up saving you nothing. The reason is, if the house is allowed to get too hot the air conditioner will have to work overtime when you return to restore the temperature to a comfortable range, negating much of the energy savings. Turning the temperature up too high can also cause problems with excess humidity, which can damage furnishings and cause mold and mildew to grow.

So what is the best temperature? We recommend setting the temperature 4-5 degrees higher than the normal setting to save energy and keep your house safe from excess heat and humidity.  If you normally set your temperature to 72, turn it up to a maximum of 77 degrees.

How to Fix a Broken Thermostat

Without a thermostat it would be nearly impossible to keep our homes at a comfortable temperature. After all, they control the heating during the colder months and the air conditioning in the spring and summer so homeowners are relying on them just about all year ‘round. However, just like most pieces of technology, they can run into problems from time to time. So if yours is on the fritz, read below to find out how to fix it:

  1. Adjust the temperature setting. If you notice your air conditioning isn’t kicking on this season when the house seems to be on the warmer side, set the thermostat 5 degrees below the normal setting. This should make the cooling system kick on.
  2. Make sure it’s set to “cool”. Oftentimes, homeowners forget to switch the system over to air conditioning after a long winter of heating.
  3. Sometimes, the condenser unit needs to be reset. Check the owner’s manual for instructions or call on the experts at ABC.
  4. Check the batteries in the thermostat and/or make sure the wires are connected properly. Each wire should be attached securely to its respective mounting screw.
  5. Check the breaker to make sure the fuse that powers the equipment has not blown.

Still can’t seem to get your thermostat or cooling system to kick on? Don’t worry, ABC Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric is here to help! Just give us a call to schedule an appointment and we’ll get you back up and running as quickly as possible.
